Writing an Introduction Paragraph: Graphic Organizer

Every time my students begin writing their essays, they always get stuck on their introduction paragraphs. They stare at their blinking cursors or unmoving pens and constantly tell me, "I don't know how to start!" It's easy to go over hook sentences, connecting sentences and writing a thesis. It's easy to give practice versions of these three introduction elements (and students seem to get it). But once they are confronted with their own paper, their minds go blank. Scaffolded 5 Paragraph Essay Outline / Organizer

This 5-paragraph essay organizer is a helpful tool for students who need significant scaffolding and support. It can be used with students from middle school through high school. Many of the 9th graders at the urban high school where I teach benefit from such a highly structured format---at least for their first essay of the year. I've discovered that if you give a student a box, she is likely to write in it. Simply having a box to fill for every sentence of the essay makes the task feel less d

Many students have trouble organizing an essay so I created this graphic organizer with sentence frames for students to fill in their thoughts. Normally, I print two copies. With the first copy, I model for the students and have them copy my writing. Then, with the second copy, they can work in pairs or independently to complete the organizer. I usually use this as a rough draft. I recommend the students already have their 3 pieces of supporting evidence chosen prior to using this graphic organi

This is a one page graphic organizer. The upper half of the page provides and example of a quote, paraphrase and a summary. The lower half asks students to create their own based on a provided quote. I start this activity by asking students to consider McDonald's menu. A quote is like an adult size nugget meal. A paraphase is like a mighty kids meal with only six nuggets, and a happy meal is like a summary with four nuggets. The summary contains the essential part of the quote and no more.
