I am a University Lecturer in Canada and teach in the General Education department. I have also taught at the college level (Montreal – Humanities department) and at a high school in New York City (English and History). All told, I have over 11 years teaching experience. While in Montreal, I developed courses that focused on various themes: justice, knowledge, evil, compassion, and courage, to name a few. I chose texts at various levels of difficulty (similar to reading complexity circles) and discovered that this approach to learning works well. In all of my courses I have texts of varying complexity: • A FULCRUM text that has multiple layers of meaning – a work that is historically significant in the development of Western culture – usually a philosophical core text; • A CONTEXT text that is slightly more accessible to students and is usually considered a “classic”; • A TEXTURE text – broadly construed – it is usually a film or a political speech. The college in Montreal was a CEGEP where I taught grade 12 and first year university. I was hired at my current university because of my ability to integrate "accessible" texts with core texts from the Western canon. In addition, I have been an SAT tutor (Critical Reading and Writing) for over fifteen years.
Socratic method. I balance core texts with more user friendly "texts" so that students are gradually drawn into literature, critical thought, and philosophy.
Yet to be added
I have a BA (Hons) and an MA from the University of Toronto.
I am also a writer with experience in short stories, screenplays, children's books, and novels.
