2/8/24 Updated to include metric versions....I did not update the sample file.This lab was inspired by responses from my Personality Online Eysenck lab. In the PO Eysenck lab, I ask the students to take out a penny and trace it onto the “Eysenck circle” to predict where their personalities will be. Needless to say, not everyone has a penny in their pocket so I got a bunch of “freehand” circles…. I thought, hmmm,…this is interesting,….they did not really look like great estimates of the true size

Phantom words were first demonstrated by Dr. Diana Deutsch at UCSD. The students navigate to her website, listen to the sounds and then list the words that they hear. They compare with a couple colleagues to see if they share any phantom words. Hopefully the students will get a kick out of the assignment and maybe they will not take language for granted quite so much. I might use these with my Psych 1 classes as something that is just a bit fun. You might duplicate these front to back and let the kids choose whether they focus on favorite or hated words.
