TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been in education for six years, primarily at an IB school.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Teaching at an international baccalaureate school, I have the opportunity to implement a variety of instructional approaches in my classroom. I integrate all content areas; including art and music. All of the comprehension activities I teach align with our current unit.   I choose appropriate texts that not only support the Iowa standards but create an opportunity for my class to be curious and inquire. My students also have the chance each year to create and perform a musical aligning with an international baccalaureate unit. They play a big role in this process- helping write and create it. I also use the downtown Des Moines community to help further my students learning. My students participate in many community events to help them become more knowledgeable. During whole group instruction, I often have my students TTYP (talk to your partner) to keep them engaged.  I also apply numerous writing to learn strategies including: quick writes, non-fiction writing, admit and exit slips, and writing frames.  I regularly teach my students chants and songs to help them learn new skills for math and reading.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Before I began my career was an educator I never imagined it would be so rewarding.  I sincerely enjoy waking up and going to school every day.  Thus far, my experience has been with first graders.  After my three years of full time teaching I am proud to say that I have taught my students how to read. I thoroughly love beginning each school year with a group of young six year olds who are eager to learn more. Every student is a challenge for me.  No child leaves my classroom without knowing how to read to the best of their ability. If a student is low, I find as many resources and interventions that I can to support them.  I am so proud that I get to be part of this important milestone in a child's life; learning how to read.  I hope my resources can help support you and your students, succeed in your classroom.
