Song of the Week Standards Practice
I have complied four songs from various genres and time periods for students to practice standard based skills with. The focus standards of this activity are: theme, word choice, author's purpose, and parallelism. Students are also given a task where they can connect the song to their personal experiences or the world around them. I am teaching this during a rhetoric unit, but it would also be great for a poetry unit.

This week-long study of Aladdin, which starts with analyzing a song from Disney's Aladdin, culminates in a narrative writing task where students add needed details to a modern translation of the original 1,000-year old text. Based on a story from A Thousand and One Nights, the oldest text from the Middle East, this mini unit can be taught as an introduction to literature of the Middle East or as a stand-alone narrative writing unit. Poetry & Protest: Analysis
Explore protest through music and poetry! In this 1-2 day activity, students will read, watch, listen to, and analyze lyrics from Moses Sumney's song Rank & File. Additional resources are provided for students who are interested in the history of protest through music and poetry, in the music itself, and/or in creative writing.

Literature Spotify Soundtrack Activity
This activity asks students to analyze the tone of a chapter of a book and provide a song that could accompany that tone. They are also asked to explain their song choice n a way that engages students and allows them to be creative. You can add more rows to this table in Google Docs to correspond to how many chapters are in a book you are reading.
