I have complied four songs from various genres and time periods for students to practice standard based skills with. The focus standards of this activity are: theme, word choice, author's purpose, and parallelism. Students are also given a task where they can connect the song to their personal experiences or the world around them. I am teaching this during a rhetoric unit, but it would also be great for a poetry unit.
