I have been teaching high school level dance in Texas for 15 years now and had the privilege of building a department from the ground up. I teach Dance I-IV including our Honors level option class. We have a mix of levels in each class depending on experience and ability. I direct an audition based performance group that meets after school to rehearse. I have also choreographed for 13 musicals at our school.
I want my dancers to gain self-confidence, communication skills, and how to problem solve as a team. I want them to become creative thinkers and know how to work with a diverse group of people. I want them to appreciate the art of dance and enjoy movement. I want them to be able to express themselves and their ideas without judging the ideas of others. Not all of my students want a career in the arts and that is fine. I do, however, want them to see how dance can make them more well-rounded individuals and provide them with the 21st century skills they need.
