I have four years of teaching theater under my belt, and hopefully many more to come. Most recently I have served as the drama teacher for 1st-4th grades at an all boys school. I have taught drama all over my city, including in schools, drop in workshops, after school enrichment classes, and summer camps. I have also had the privilege to teach a wide age range from pre-K up through high school. However, my specialty is elementary ages.
As a teacher, I hope to share my passion with my students and help them find a sense of play, as well as their self-confidence through the world of theatre. Creating and imagining are so important, and integral to the arts world at any age. In any classroom I enter, I encourage students to bring themselves -- who they are, where they come from, what they like and dislike -- to the class. I think students learn best by feeling they’re in a safe space. Whether that is to play, make friends, have a brief escape from other things, or simply try new things, this is always a chief priority. One of my biggest mantras has become that there are no mistakes in art. Kids are under a lot of pressure these days, and there’s a huge sense of needing to get something “right”. However, in my classroom, I make a point to ensure that whatever creative choices we’re making are celebrated. Even if someone “messes up” it’s a learning moment on how we can keep moving forward when something doesn’t go as expected. When I leave a class at the end of a contract or show, my biggest goal is to see student improvements, be it in confidence, coming out of their shells, taking on more of a leadership role in class, speaking up with a loud and proud voice, or just finding more of that element of “play”.
