What educators are saying

I have used this resource in class with my students and also have left it for a substitute to use. Directions are easy to follow, students were engaged during the lesson, and were able to understand plot.
I LOVED this resource. It was a great way to break down plot elements for students. It lead to great conversations and debate over what fit.

Description

Teaching about story plot has never been easier with this 5-day lesson plan! This standards-based (both CCSS and TEKS) interactive lesson study of the literary element of Plot will have your students learning about, discussing, and applying ideas about how plot works and is created in fiction throughout the course of five days.

There are five engaging classroom-tested lesson plans that detail everything you will need to do, STEP-BY-STEP, to teach your students about Plot. There are also graphic organizers for each day so that your students are able to apply their learning to the novels and stories you are currently using in class.

The five days culminates in a written plot summary, asking the students to take what they learned about plot and apply it to a written a paragraph about any novel or story of their choosing. There is also a graphic organizer to help scaffold the writing for your students.

Each of these lessons can be further applied to any novel study and will carry throughout the entire year.

Included in this resource:

  • 5 Days of Step-by-Step lesson plans
  • Interactive Notebook Pages
  • Anchor Chart example
  • Plot Diagram Sort
  • Mentor Text for dissecting plot elements and structure
  • Plot Flow Chart
  • Printables and answer keys for all with teacher examples
  • Writing frame for plot summary

Once the project is completed, you will have a written plot summary fit for display on a bulletin board! The students will be able to showcase their learning with a detailed, in depth plot summary.

This classroom tested project is something I have used in my own classroom across multiple grade levels with great success. The students enjoyed the process of learning about plot, creating their own drawings, dissecting mentor text and then using those same ideas to a current classroom novel.

Prep is easy and painless. Everything you need to effectively teach your students about plot structure using novels and classroom stories is here! This mini-unit is a great way to hit many different standards across the curriculum AND have a wonderful display of student written work.
