What educators are saying

Great resource for reversible and irreversible changes. Very user friendly. Download and go resource. Thanks so much!
This was a great activity to practice reversible and irreversible changes. I liked the text that went with it.

Description

In this SORT REVERSIBLE VS. IRREVERSIBLE CHANGES activity, students determine whether changes caused by heating and cooling are reversible or irreversible changes. They sort pictures with descriptions into two categories. Students then answer science comprehension questions to reinforce what they have learned.

This hands-on learning tool aligns seamlessly with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), providing a meaningful way for students to explore and understand the concepts of reversible and irreversible changes, particularly those caused by heating or cooling substances.

Included in this SCIENCE SORT ACTIVITY

  • Student reading passages in four formats
  • MP3 Audio of the text read aloud
  • Sorting Activity with colored cards
  • Sorting Activity in a black and white worksheet
  • Differentiated Comprehension Questions (short answer, fill-in-the-blank with and without a word bank, task cards, multiple-choice questions)
  • Answer Key
  • Google Form™️ with Reading Text & Differentiated Questions
  • Google Slides™️ with Sort Activity

Differentiated Science Comprehension Questions

Each station includes four different ways to respond to the experience at the station:

  • short answer questions
  • fill-in-the-blank questions with aword bank
  • fill-in-the-blank questions without word bank
  • task cards with short answers
  • task cards with multiple-choice

All the variations are similar to one another. Choose the format that best fits your classroom and students. Students are encouraged to use their science journals, but worksheets are included as well.

This SORT station is also available in a larger bundle of 8 Reversible and Irreversible Changes Science Stations.

KEY FEATURES OF THIS SCIENCE SORTING ACTIVITY

  • Interactive Card Sorting: The activity includes a set of illustrated cards, each depicting a specific change and accompanied by a clear, concise description. Students will sort these cards into two categories: reversible changes and irreversible changes.
  • Aligned with NGSS Standards: Specifically crafted to meet the standards of 2-PS1-4, the activity encourages students to construct arguments with evidence about the reversibility of certain changes.
  • Deepens Understanding of DCI 2-PS1.B: By engaging with the sorting activity, students will gain a practical understanding of how heating or cooling a substance can lead to observable changes, some of which are reversible, while others are not.
  • Supports Engineering Design DCI ETS1.B: The Investigate, Diagram, and Explore stations incorporated into the activity align with ETS1.B, enabling students to convey their understanding through sketches, drawings, or physical models.
  • Crosscutting Concepts Integration: The activity is designed to meet the Crosscutting Concepts, particularly Cause and Effect (2-PS1-4). It helps students identify observable patterns and understand the causes behind them.

THIS RESOURCE:

  • Enhances Critical Thinking: Students engage in critical thinking as they categorize each change, weighing the evidence and making informed decisions.
  • Promotes Collaboration: Ideal for group work, the activity encourages students to discuss and collaborate, enhancing their communication and teamwork skills.
  • Hands-On Learning: By physically sorting the cards, students gain a tactile understanding of the concepts, aiding in memory retention and comprehension.
  • Visual Learning Aids: The vivid illustrations on each card help visual learners grasp abstract concepts more concretely.

The full set of Reversible & Irreversible Changes Stations Include:

Big Idea Posters that explain the core ideas of the stations (BUNDLE ONLY)

Vocabulary Cards in two formats with and without pictures (BUNDLE ONLY)

Watch a Video about States of Matter - Students watch a video in order to learn about changes in states of matter or about how the changes in states of water make clouds and weather.  They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Play a Game about Reversible and Irreversible Changes - Students play a video game, a board game, a crossword puzzle, or word search and learn about reversible and irreversible changes. Students answer questions to reinforce new learning.

Investigate Reversible and Irreversible Changes - Students read about reversible and irreversible changes, specifically when matter changes state.  They make observations of an example of an irreversible change in order to investigate this.  They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Diagram Changing States of Matter - Students read about changes in states of matter.  They put together a diagram of changing states of matter and answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Read a Passage about Reversible and Irreversible Changes - Students read about properties and states of matter.  They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Model Atoms in Solids and Liquids - Students read about states of matter and types of changes.  They make a model of and answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Explore Reversible & Irreversible Changes - Students read about changing states of matter.  They explore this and answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Sort Reversible and Irreversible Changes - Students read about reversible and irreversible changes as matter changes state.  They sort pictures into two categories.  They then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Each station is designed to last about 15-20 minutes. Students may do one a day for 8 days, 2 a day for four days, or any format that works for your classroom. Because there are additional activities for the Watch and Play stations, you can offer those as a choice within that station or offer them as an early finisher station, as well.

Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot. Examples of reversible changes could include materials such as water and butter at different temperatures. Examples of irreversible changes could include cooking an egg, freezing a plant leaf, and heating paper.
