    Description

It's a Matter of Changes in States of Matter! This second grade science unit is all about Reversible and Irreversible Changes and includes 8 different science centers where students deepen their understanding of the changes in states of matter through reading passages, worksheets, labs, and more.. All stations help students gain an understanding of how some changes caused by heating and cooling can be reversed and some cannot. These lesson plans, experiments and investigations are perfect for your second grade classroom and homeschool students. They meet the Next Generation Science Standards for Second Grade - NGSS 2-PS1-4.

Key Concepts in this Science Unit include

    • Changes in states of matter
    • Reversible and irreversible changes
    • Heating and cooling substances
    • Dissolvable substances

Reversible & Irreversible Changes Stations Include

Big Idea Posters that explain the core ideas of the stations (BUNDLE ONLY)

Vocabulary Cards in two formats with and without pictures (BUNDLE ONLY)

Watch a Video about States of Matter - Students watch a video in order t o learn about changes in states of matter or about how the changes in states of water makes clouds and weather.  They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Play a Game about Reversible and Irreversible Changes - Students play a video game, a board game, a crossw ord puzzle, or word search and learn about reversible and irreversible changes. Students answer questions to reinforce new learning.

Investigate Reverisble and Irreversible Changes - Students read about reversible and irreversi ble changes, specifically when matter changes state.  They make observations of an example of an irreversible change in order to investigate this.  The answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Diagram Changing States of Matter - Students read about changes in s tates of matter.  They put together a diagram of changing states of matter and answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Read a Passage about Reversible and Irreversible Changes - Students read about properties and states of matter.  T hey answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Model Atoms in Solids and Liquids - Students read about and states o f matter and types of changes.  They make a model of and answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Explore Reversible & Irreversible Changes - Students read about changing states of m atter.  They explore this and answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Sort Reversible and Irreversible Changes - Students read about reversible and ir reversible changes as matter changes state.  They sort pictures into two categories.  They then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

    MP3 AUDIO

Includes all MP3 audio of all text passages. You can access the MP3 via a website or install them on your devices to have students listen to the texts read aloud to them.

    GOOGLE CLASSROOM™️ COMPONENTS INCLUDE

    • Google Forms™️ with Reading Passages, Differentiated Questions and Links to the Videos and Games (all stations)
    • Google Slides™️ with Activity Directions & Worksheets to record results (Investigate, Diagram, Model, Explore, and Sort)

While we have included Google Slides, many of the stations are hands-on.

    DIFFERENTIATED RESPONSES

Each station includes four different ways to respond to the experience at the station: short answer questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, task cards with short answers, task cards with multiple choice. All the variations are similar to one another. Choose the format that best fits your classroom and students. Students are encouraged to use their science journals, but worksheets are included as well.

Each station is designed to last about 15-20 minutes. Students may do one a day for 8 days, 2 a day for four days, or any format that works for your classroom. Because there are additional activities for the Watch and Play stations, you can offer those as a choice within that station or offer them as an early finisher station, as well.

    NGSS STANDARDS

In Second Grade, students are expected to demonstrate understanding in the following areas:

    • 2-PS1-4. Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot.

This correlates with the DCI 2-PS1.B, which states:

    • Heating or cooling a substance may cause changes that can be observed. Sometimes these changes are reversible, and sometimes they are not.

The Investigate, Diagram, and Explore stations correlate with the Engineering Design DCI ETS1.B, which states:

    • Designs can be conveyed through sketches, drawings, or physical models. These representations are useful in communicating ideas for a problem’s solutions to other people. (K-2-ETS1-2)

    Crosscutting Concepts

The Crosscutting Concepts are met in the following ways:

    • Cause and Effect: Events have causes that generate observable patterns. (2-PS1-4)

This Concept is met in the Investigate, Model, and Explore stations.

    NGSS2-PS1-4
Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot. Examples of reversible changes could include materials such as water and butter at different temperatures. Examples of irreversible changes could include cooking an egg, freezing a plant leaf, and heating paper.
    NGSS2-PS1-1
Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties. Observations could include color, texture, hardness, and flexibility. Patterns could include the similar properties that different materials share.
    NGSS2-PS1-2
Analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose. Examples of properties could include, strength, flexibility, hardness, texture, and absorbency. Assessment of quantitative measurements is limited to length.
