What educators are saying

I used this with my tutoring class after school to focus on writing. They really enjoyed researching about video game use and connecting it back to Fortnite. It was amazing reading their claims at the end. Highly recommend for an engaging activity!
This has helped tremendously in our non fiction work. It has been wonderful to see the students use their learned knowledge in other areas such as science and social studies. Thank You!

Description

Are you looking for a fun way to engage your students in persuasive writing and learn about making a claim? If so, check out this persuasive writing prompt and graphic organizer project! Students will first find out what a claim is, then read an article, an infographic, and read student voices about the pros and cons of playing Fortnite, the popular video game played by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. This pack explores this topic, while asking students to make their own determination on the topic based on the evidence provided. The topic makes this skill fun and engaging for students!

⭐Making a Claim: Should Fortnite Be BANNED? - Persuasive Writing Prompt & Project Focuses On the Following:

  • Students will then use the graphic organizer provided to write down notes and plan their essay stating their own claim.
  • Students will then begin to plan a letter where they will take a stand, making their own claim using specific details from the texts they read.
  • This activity allows students to read articles, while practicing using text details to support their claim, a common core writing standard.

⭐ Please note that the articles include the words "kill, guns, and weapons" when discussing the Fortnite game. When discussing these words, the articles suggest that these are reasons why the game is NOT appropriate for young people. The articles are written in an age-appropriate manner for grades 3-6.

My kid and I fight over fortnite play time all the time. This resource was great at helping me to hear his side of the story, and it also was a great opinion piece work sample for our homeschool

⭐ My students are OBSESSED with Fortnite. So any excuse to get them to write and talk about their favorite video game is a win-win!

⭐ Great resource to use to help students with the writing process. My students were engaged because they were interested in the topic. I was finally able to get the message across.
