When I taught first grade we would have a morning meeting on the carpet every day. During this time we would sit in a circle and our leader would pick one of these questions out of a bag for the whole class to take turns answering.

Perfume Creative Writing/Advertisement
This is a fantastic way to get students thinking creatively AND using persuasive techniques. I introduce the example first. Ask the students what makes it appealing to consumers. Then show them their directions. Have half-sheets of white paper already cut and coloring materials ready. I cut perfume samples out of magazines into small pieces and put them in a Ziploc. Have students choose ONE from the Ziploc and ONLY smell their sample (otherwise the nose gets confused). Allow 20+ minutes for this

Writing Side Project Plan
I use this to kick off Writing Workshop with my 6th graders. My students plan writing side projects to be working on mostly for fun! It's also great for early finishers. Being 1:1 allows them to have lots of mediums to make side projects, so this just helps them plan what they'd like to write about. Every so often, students share their progress. This worked great for my advanced writers who needed a little more of a challenge. This is inspired by Jennifer Serravallo's Writing Strategies lesson.
