Practice calculating volume and describing 2D cross sections of 3D figures with this activity. Students select an object for this project. I usually ask them to bring in objects that resemble the 3D figures we have been studying, such as rectangular prisms, cylinders, spheres, cones, etc. (You might advise your students which 3D figures are acceptable.) Students measure the dimensions to use in calculating volume. They sketch two cross sections for each object and calculate the area of each one.
