Similar Figures Lab

In this lab, students work through 12 stations. At each station, there are 2 similar figures. Students must find the length of a missing side on one of the shapes. Also included is a student worksheet on which students must write a proportion for each problem.

Ratios and Proportions Measuring Activity

This is a group activity for students to practice ratios and proportions as well as measurement skills. They will take turns measuring each group member's height, shoe length, and shadow length. They will graph height vs. shoe length and height vs. shadow length to determine which relationship is proportional. You will need to have measuring tapes or other measuring devices available to each student group, as well as access to a sunny outdoor location. Although data will vary greatly, an e

MATH LESSON & MATH LAB on Really Big Numbers!

Created by
Jean's MATH
Most people can identify numbers in the millions, billions and trillions, but few people actually know the names for some really big numbers after that! This is a tried and true math lesson and lab that I have created and used for many years with my 7th and 8th grade classes. Students get a "kick" out of learning about really big numbers that they were never able to identify before now. They walk away feeling empowered and ready to share their knowledge with others! In the MATH LESSON, students

Math Lab: Investigating Second-hand Smoke Using Inequality Symbols

This lab is great to use as reinforcement to newly learned lessons, or it can be used as a semester review! Honestly, this is one of my favorites!* Working with a partner, students use balloons to measure the volume of a single breath of air and apply their calculations to determine (mathematically) how much second-hand smoke they breathe when exposed!* In the process of making their discovery, students use the circumference formula in a variety of forms in order to find a radius, and ultimatel

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE ABLE TO ACCESS GOOGLE DOCS BEFORE PURCHASING THIS MATH LAB!!! I will be making updates as feedback comes in, so check back to the link often! This is a fun lesson that takes between 90-120 minutes. I have 45 minute periods and with my 6th graders in a class of 24, we were able to gather all of our data and have 10 minutes to spare. The next day, we finished the calculations and the visuals. Some worked faster than others, so some of the kids got to the reflection quest

Number Line

Students are given a number line to put together and about 30 integers to place on it. This activity is to see students prior knowledge. Before any gluing takes place have a quick discussion and monitor student work to make sure all integers are in their correct location. Afterwards, I had students like at least 4 things they noticed about the numbers on the number line.

8th grade Task Rotation for Fractions and Volume

Shane Hood
This is a task rotation for my intro chapter to 8th grade math. I do a combination of fractions and geometry formulas. Give each station roughly 10 minutes to work on each problem. For station 3 it might help to pre tape the two cylinders to cut down on that time for students and to give them more time to work.
