TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught for 2 years in 5th grade as a Social Studies and English Language Arts classroom teacher. After two years, I realized that my favorite part of my teaching day was the planning part. I loved writing lesson plans, studying curriculum, attending curriculum meetings with other teachers...I know, not the passion of most teachers. My passion is helping other teachers teach excellently! I continue to stay in touch with the "world of education" through my husband (who is a kindergarten teacher) and by keeping up with my own professional development: I read journal articles and books, attend lectures, watch documentaries, research issues, and have lots of conversations with teachers and parents about education. My GOAL is to work HARD for teachers who work HARDER. I want to support teachers in the profoundly important work of educating youth.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe the role of a teacher is to create a learning environment that is intentionally designed to invite students to think deeply, cultivate their imagination, and develop personal responsibility for their education.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Honors in Education: Investigated the correlation between students’ gaming habits and their higher order thinking skills (published by Houghton College); Suma Cum Laude; Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a Bachelor of Science in Inclusive Childhood Education from Houghton College. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors in Education. I did my Honors Project on the effect of digital gaming on higher order thinking (specifically reading comprehension). I plan to begin a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction (from Regent University) in the Fall of 2015.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am a wife, mother, and educator! In that order. I am super passionate about education...so imagine what I'm like about motherhood and wife...hood. (Not sure that's a word.) If "mother" was third on my list of priorities, I would probably be a curriculum coordinator right now. But its not. So I am currently a stay-at-home-mom. My husband and I have 3 children and I couldn't imagine spending my day-to-day with anyone but them. My husband, as I mentioned earlier, is a Kindergarten teacher. (I know, you're thinking "wow, there aren't that many male teachers in primary school...so true...he's one of a kind in so many ways!) We are devout Catholics and we are passionate about sharing our faith and teaching it to our children...as many as the Lord gives to us. Children are a blessing and we remain always open to life. We live near both of our parents and we are so thankful that our kids will have the opportunity to know and learn from them: Grandma & Grandpa and Nonnie & Papa!
