I taught 5th grade ESL (SEI) immersion and K-6 ESL pull-out in public schools until I had my first child. I home-schooled my own children in reading, math, religious studies, and Hebrew, when they were younger. Then, I taught art at a religious day school, using my B.S. in Communication and Fine Arts. As the school grew immensely, so did the art position, but I wanted only part-time work. I switched positions and became the elementary reading interventionist at the school, using my M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and Reading Endorsement. I continued using summers to homeschool world history, math, Greek and Latin roots, English reading and writing skills. Now, I tutor privately, create educational products for my store, and raise my children.
Current research shows that game-based learning is absolutely necessary for students with IEPs. And we know that what works for ELL students and students in SPED, also works for typical students. From "The Impact of Game-Based Learning in a Special Education Classroom" by McKenzi James, “game-based learning is a must to help guide instruction, create a positive environment, and generate academic success…" The theory put forth by ESL guru Stephen Krashen, as well as neuroscientists, is that students often put up an invisible, non-verbal, emotional wall that blocks their learning. Our job as educators is to "lower the affective filter" so learning can take place. My educational resources are brain-based, fun, engaging, and most importantly - effective! Students are supported, not intimidated by the activities, and feel motivated to participate in the games and hands-on activities, which is the way to lower the affective filter. My resources use various modalities to help students acquire the learning in different ways. And, the latest brain research shows that using multiple parts of the brain while learning, is a most effective way to learn, rather than sitting still or doing skill-and-drill worksheets.
