TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 5 years teaching experience as a primary school teacher based in England, UK. I have taught in Year 3, 4 and 5 (3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade). Over the course of my teaching career, I have developed a specialism for Primary Mathematics. I hold a MaST (Mathematics Specialist Teacher) qualification from Edge Hill University, England. In order to gain this qualification, I conducted substantial classroom based work and linked this to current educational theories and practice. I am Mathematics subject co-ordinator for my school and have responsibility for overseeing the subject in school in terms of teaching and learning, progress, etc. I am also a Leading Maths Practitioner for my local educational authority and present at CPD (continuous professional development) events held for teachers. As well as Mathematics, I also enjoy teaching creative writing and Science.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that all children need to be actively involved in their learning. I believe in a hands-on, practical approach to teaching and incorporate this style as much as possible in my practice. In reference to maths, children need to be exposed to several models and images (manipulatives) which helps them build a repertoire of pictures in their head and make sense of mathematical concepts. For example, fractions is a very abstract concept and the use of models such as fraction circles, paper folding or double sided counters will help develop a conceptual understanding of fractions. Children need to develop a "sense of number" and know "what a number looks like". This can be achieved through use of deines or base blocks.

In 2006, I graduated with a Bsc (Hons) in Accounting For Management from Aston University, Birmingham.
