I have been teaching 8th grade English at an urban middle school for 12 years. I am part of the MLL/ELL team which requires a lot of differentiated strategies. As challenging as 8th graders in a low-income, urban district, can be; I absolutely LOVE teaching them.
I have a unique teaching style. My students trust me because of my genuine interaction with them. I engage the students by incorporating creative learning centers, various forms of technology, hands-on activities and fun manipulatives. I am especially focused on student-centered teaching and learning because when they have a voice in what they are learning they become excited and motivated.
Once, I was nominated for "Teacher of the Year" in my district. Even though someone else won, I was still so honored.
It wasn't until after I obtained my Associate of Science degree in Business Management, at Johnson & Wales University, when I realized I was meant to be a teacher. I went back to get my Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education, concentration in English, at Rhode Island College.
