TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching elementary school general music for over 25 years. I also have performed all over the world as a professional oboist. I began writing scripts 30 years ago when I found myself frustrated with many "canned" scripts and shows. Years and years of sitting in rehearsals as an oboist taught me a lot of how productions SHOULD be run.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am eclectic to be sure and bring a variety of skills to my teaching. I had exceptional music training as an oboist at the University of Michigan. I also had the opportunity to complete an equivalency degree in Music Therapy. I think it can be difficult for some performers to "make the switch" into a field such as General Music. What I learned though, is that I can be an awesome teacher for children by understanding it is MY job to make them successful! I don't try to pound a round peg into a square hole. I design activities that are high level yet flexible for a variety of learners. I use guitar, we sing a lot and most of all we learn that there is very little in life that does NOT have some kind of musical connection. Music does NOT exist in a vacuum...it is as essential to our lives as breathing.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I have taught in varied settings, including for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools in Germany, private school settings, adjunct faculty at Salisbury University and Wicomico County Public schools. I have been commissioned to write musicals for special events in the Baltimore area. I custom write musicals and stand up concert scripts as well as my favorite *Drop In Musicals" . I also understand staging, performing AND most importantly for a public school teacher, I understand how to "make something out of nothing" materials wise. I love the flexibility and creativity that is found in teaching general music. I LOVE writing and "doing" shows.
