I teach at an alternative high school for at-risk students. I am the only English teacher to a building of 100 students and teach grades 9-12, a class in graphic novels, and a class in creative writing.
I work primarily with students who don't like writing or reading, have a bad relationship with schools and teachers, and typically have few if anyone caring about their grades. Every day I have the mindset that my students don't have time to waste and need to make gains to improve their reading and writing skills. I also try my hardest to actively make my lessons more engaging for my students.I don't expect my students to do the classwork because it's classwork.
