I am a National Board Certified teacher with nearly two decades of experience in two different urban/suburban high schools. The courses that I have taught are Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Discrete Math, and Honor's Pre-Calculus. My Algebra 1 experience includes a decade of sheltered ESL algebra classes with a wider variety of native languages that you could probably even name. I have begun creating some animations to help students-- especially those who speak very little English-- understand algebra. I received a grant in 2014 to travel to California and interview animators at Pixar, Disney, and Sony Animation Studios! It was AWESOME!!!
I am trying to make pre-calculus more and more applicable to real life for my honor's students. I am doing this by creating hands-on activities and applicable word problems. At the same time, I am trying to eliminate communication gaps that exist for ESL students in order to help them focus their energy on learning the math rather than constantly translating speech and written material into their native languages. I have begun to create some animations to help students visualize problems.
