What educators are saying

Our school has decided to go to standards-based grading and these rubrics have saved me so much frustration with trying to adapt and think through this transition.
A great resource to help me, students, and parents understand the process of standard-based grading.

Description

Updated to reflect the 2023 Rubrics!

Several years ago, I implemented Standards Based Grading in my APUSH classes. When I first started with this grading system, much of my time was taken up with creating the new forms and documents that were necessary for students to understand SBG, keep track of their grades, apply the AP rubrics to a 5-point standard, and help students to determine their grades. Ultimately, this took me bunches of time. I've gathered together 7 different documents to help you implement SBG in APUSH, AP World, or AP Euro classroom. I've also included an explanation that describes how I've made this system work.

These tools for SBG have been tested in my real classroom, and I've seen a definitive improvement in my results as after I decided to utilize Standards Based Grading in my class. You can read more about this on my blog at peacefieldhistory.com.

Included in this bundle:

  • Assessment Reflection Worksheet - Here students record their scores, and reflect on why they earned what they earned. I’ve provided a filled in example and a blank sheet.

  • A General DBQ Rubric - Each skill has been divided on a scale of 0 to 5. This allows students to work towards mastery without penalizing them with the all or nothing rubric on the actual exam.

  • A General LEQ Rubric - Each skill has been divided on a scale of 0 to 5. Again, this allows students to work towards mastery without penalizing them with the all or nothing rubric on the actual exam. If you are grading an essay with one particular type of question, you can cut and paste what you need.

  • A Syllabus which explains SBG - This syllabus provides an explanation of SBG for parents and students and an explanation of my retesting policy. I’ve provided a generic example, and one filled in for reference. I also included my other language and my movie policy - just to be helpful.

  • A general SAQ Rubric with answer box - This is a 0-5 point scale rubric for SAQs. Again, this allows students to work towards mastery without penalizing them with the all or nothing rubric on the actual exam. There are two versions of this rubric.

  • A Quarterly Grade Conversion Chart - This allows students to figure out their grades, and convert them to a 100 point scale (if needed for your school district).

  • A Request to Retest Slip - This is a slip students would be required to fill out to improve their score on any test or quiz. Paper Version - or Google Form version (NEW!)

Included in this resource:

  • Word version of Assessment Reflection, Quarterly Grade Conversion, Request to Retest, and LEQ, DBQ, and SAQ rubrics (editable)
  • Google Docs version of Assessment Reflection, Quarterly Grade Conversion, Request to Retest, and LEQ, DBQ, and SAQ rubrics (editable)
  • PDF version of Assessment Reflection, Quarterly Grade Conversion, Request to Retest, and LEQ, DBQ, and SAQ rubrics (not editable)
  • Google Slides Version of Syllabus (editable) - Also, PowerPoint and PDF Versions
  • Google Form version of Request to Retest
  • Full explanation for implementation
