What educators are saying

I used this as additional practice with tutoring students. It really helped my students with this concept.

Description

Modeling adding and subtracting integers on the number line. Student page print or digital option. This two page worksheet can be used as homework, classwork (either individually or in small groups), guided instruction, or an assessment. It is in landscape mode so the number lines are larger and more usable for students. The first problem is shown as a guide for students and models adding and subtracting integers using lines with arrows always starting at zero. There is one three-step problem and one problem where students must create their own word problem and model the answer on the number line given. I have also used this activity with my students to model different types of number line adding and subtracting (arcs, individual counting with loops, etc.). The kids love to come up to the whiteboard to demonstrate different ways to represent adding and subtracting integers.

Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, 𝘱 – 𝘲 = 𝘱 + (–𝘲). Show that the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply this principle in real-world contexts.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers.
