Description
Vocabulary activities help expand students' language skills. Having students work on a Word of the Week with a graphic organizer helps them master new word meanings. It also helps them learn synonyms, antonyms, and word usage through sentence writing.
With this resource students will:
- master new word meanings
- learn several synonyms and antonyms for each word
- practice incorporating the word into a sentence
This resource can be used for:
- morning work
- word work centers
- intervention
- teaching dictionary skills
Suggestion for Use:
Monday: Students write down the word of the week, the part of speech, and its definition.
Tuesday: Students look up and discuss synonyms and antonyms. Having them find synonyms and antonyms helps them expand their vocabulary even further.
Wednesday: Share with them the use of the word in a sentence. Then, have them write their own sentence. As they write their sentence, walk around and provide scaffolding for those students who need it.
Thursday: Students illustrate their sentences.
Friday: Students rate their understanding. Students also share their worksheet with a partner.
This resource includes:
5 different styles of cover pages for students’ booklets
2 different styles of table of contents
4 different styles of headers for your Word of the Week display in your classroom
36 Word of the Week posters including the word of the week, part of speech, definition and sample sentence (9 W.O.W. per marking period)
36 mini Word of the Week poster headers with only the word (I usually have the best elaborate sentence writers copy their sentences onto an index card and then we display them in our classroom under the word headers.)
1 Word of the Week worksheet that students fill out each week (Information includes word, part of speech, synonym, antonym, sentence, illustration and rating.)
4 quarterly cumulative quizzes (including answer sheets)
