Description
This is always a really popular project that we do with senior grade visual art students in high school. It's cheap, approachable, and students can get CRAZY creative with this one. They love it!
The project asks them to design a coffee cup.
The project involves
✤ creating 4 mini thumbnail drawings of potential designs
✤ deciding on a theme to work with
✤ using whatever materials they wish
✤ they also have to design the sleeve of the coffee cup (you could make this optional) and other ideas are included, such as incorporating the lid, the stir stick, etc!
They always create a buzz around the school when we put them on display - they're fantastic!
We even had one local coffee shop put them on display as an art show
:)
Also included are a page with exemplars (you can project these with an LCD to get kids excited), and a rubric to make marking easy. AND! A list of themes in case you wish to structure your project around the students picking a theme to work with.
TIPS
- Starbucks/other coffee places will often give you free coffee cups (!!) if they know you're a teacher, so be sure to mention that if you're asking
- This also makes for a great follow-up to any class trip...sometimes I take them downtown and they have to do thumbnail sketches of graffiti they see, and design the cups based off that. I've also done it with gallery/museum trips.
- You could easily tweak this for an English class project / fashion design / Photography etc
