What educators are saying

I love this resource! My students were engaged and working the whole time. They were extremely motivated to escape. Great resource!

Description

Can your 5th grade students use their knowledge of addition and subtractions of fractions and mixed-numbers to stop the Valentine's Villain in this fun digital escape room? When all of the heart-shaped candies are stolen, your class can save the day. Reviewing math skills at your class Valentine's Day party has never been so exciting! Keeping students engaged with educational material can be a challenge on a day like Valentine's Day. This online breakout game will have them reviewing addition and subtraction with fractions while having fun!

Designed for fifth grade standards, this activity could also be used by advanced fourth graders or for review for sixth graders. The escape process is fully automated using Boom Cards™. There are no clues to hide or answers to check, making it super simple for teachers to implement. Students must have a device that can access the internet to complete this activity. The escape room works on computers or tablets.

To use Boom Cards, you must be connected to the Internet. Boom Cards play on modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge). Apps are available for modern Android, iPads, iPhones, and Kindle Fires. For security and privacy, adults must have a Boom Learning account to use and assign Boom Cards. You will be able to assign the Boom Cards you are buying with “Fast Pins,” (a form of play that gives instant feedback to students for self-grading Boom Cards). For assignment options that report student progress back to you, you will need to purchase a premium account. If you are new to Boom Learning, you will be offered a free trial of our premium account. • Simplify and reduce fractions and mixed-numbers
  • Add mixed numbers with regrouping
  • Subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping (students can use visual models or equations)
  • Solving word problems involving parts of the same whole using equations or visual fraction models
  • Solving multi-step word problems involving adding and subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping
  • Comparing the value of fractions using equivalent fractions, number lines, unit bars, or other strategies
  • Solving basic logic puzzles

FAQ

  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge quickly (20-30 minutes), but most will take longer. The majority of students will take between 35-55 minutes. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Boom Deck™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
  • Can this be used for distance learning? Absolutely! Boom Cards™ are great for remote learning or in-class!

Escape Rooms are great to encourage cooperative learning among students and can be used for review, enrichment, or just for fun! Groups of three are ideal for this activity, but it can also be completed individually or with larger or smaller groups as technology allows.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
