Description
This is a trading game that can be played with most primary aged children. It has been designed to teach children about the history of trade, giving children a greater understanding of why money is now the system of exchange used in most societies today. This game also helps children in understanding the concepts of trade, bartering, exchange, needs, goods and services.
This product includes 14 pages of resources which contain the following:
- 24 x game cards
- 12 x sets of 10 (120 in total) goods and services cards
Game Instructions:
Each child is given one game card that specifies their occupation/skill. They are also given 5 goods and services cards that match the skill written on their game card.
(e.g. If they are a Baker, they would be given 5 bread cards)
On each game card, there is a list of 5 needs that the children will have to acquire in order to complete the game. To do this, the children will need to use the goods/services cards they already have and trade these with their classmates until they have all the correct cards.
In some instances, the children will be able to make a straight swap with each other, but the children will also realize that this may not be possible for all of the items on their list. The children will need to figure out how they can get around this challenge by first trading some of their cards for items not written on their list and then trading these on again until they are able to get the items they need.
Depending on how many children are playing in each game, the outcome of the game may vary with some children being unable to obtain all their items. This helps the children to identify some of the disadvantages and challenges that the trading and bartering system has, and is also a good demonstration to explain why money is now used in most societies instead. It is also a good starting point to lead into a discussion about supply and demand if teaching older children.
