This Rainbow Fish pack includes two sets of the following printables in color and black and white:

• 1 Cut and paste sorting worksheet - sort traits into qualities and appearance of 'The Rainbow Fish.'

• Cut and paste sorting worksheet - sort character traits of 'The Rainbow Fish' into positive and negative qualities.

• 1 Cut and paste sorting worksheets - sort qualities of The Rainbow Fish into the beginning and end of the story.

• 1 Cut and paste sorting worksheet - sort traits into qualities and appearance of 'The Little Blue Fish.'

• 2 cut and paste sorting worksheets - sort synonyms and antonyms for the physical traits: beautiful and nasty.

• 1 template - students write physical traits and qualities of the wise octopus. The students will need to make inferences about the characters qualities....for example: mysterious, assertive.

The Rainbow Fish Character Traits Game

Engage your students with this fun and interactive "Rainbow Fish Character Traits Game." The Rainbow Fish activity is the perfect game for students to make inferences about the character traits for: The Rainbow Fish at the beginning, middle and end of the story, Little Blue Fish and the octopus. Students will have fun sorting the character traits cards under the yes or no heading! The Rainbow Fish character traits game can be played as a whole class, in small groups or as an independent activity.

The Rainbow Fish Activity/Game Includes:

• 2 heading - yes/no

• Teacher instructions

• 4 character cards - The Rainbow Fish at the beginning of the story and end of the story, The Little Blue Fish and the octopus.

• 48 character trait cards - mostly character traits, some physical trait cards also included.

The Rainbow Fish Yes/NO Game can be played with 1-2 players, small group or played as a whole class. To play as a group:

•Students sit around a circular table or on the carpet. Place the headings yes and no in the middle of the circle.

•If group of 6 students, give each student 8 character trait cards to place under the yes or no heading, and put the remaining 4 character trait cards aside.

•Students take it in turn to select a character card and sort their cards under the correct heading.

•Ask each student to provide evidence or a reason why they think the character displays that character trait or not. For example the Rainbow Fish was selfish because he wouldn't share his scales with the other fish.

Option 2 - Play Corners - whole class game

•Stick the heading yes in one corner of the room and no in another corner.

•Teacher calls out a character trait. Students walk to the yes or no corner.

•Select a student to give a reason why they went to the yes or no corner for that particular character trait.

•If the students went to the wrong corner then they are out of the game.

•Keep playing until you have a winner or small group of students who are left.

By playing this game regularly in class students will have a deeper understanding about character traits. This game also promotes class discussions about character traits. Students will discuss why they infer a character displays a character trait. Answers may vary with students as they have different beliefs and personal opinions.

Character Traits Word Wall Cards and Writing Paper

This pack consists of 32 brightly colored (purple and blue) starburst cards to brighten up your bulletin board, ready for when you undertake a unit on character traits of The Rainbow Fish, little blue fish or octopus.

Great to use for: Character study units, descriptive writing, literacy centers, reading and writing activities and word work.

How to use cards in class: Display on bulletin board in class where students can visibly see the cards whilst writing. The cards are color coded to assist students to identify physical traits and qualities of characters. The character cards and physical traits have a blue starburst background whilst the qualities have a purple background. These cards can be utilized the following ways:

* descriptive writing

* creative writing

* constructing sentences
