Description

Shirley Jackson, one of America's best loved horror and mystery writers, shines in her most widely-read story, "The Lottery." I hope your students can find depth and meaning in the story using these worksheets.

I tried to incorporate as much in-depth, active and critical thinking skills as possible in the work. This is a dark story, but there is so much to get out of it. If you are using it as pre-reading for a novel unit, I hope there are connections to be made while reading.

I’ve included a post-novel unit chart to draw those connections together, too!

Use as much or as little as you’d like – the worksheets can be used on an individual basis, or build on each other if you have some time.

Included are worksheets on the following:

  • Pre-Reading Chart and Letter Writing Option
  • Character Chart
  • Critical Thinking Questions about Characters and Characterization
  • Irony and Foreshadowing
  • Symbolism and Horror
  • Making Topics into Thematic Statements
  • Short Essay Responses
  • Post-Reading Connection Chart

This should be challenging and thought-provoking work for your students. I am sure there will be many classroom discussions, too!

Thank you!
