Description
Every school faces a summer reading struggle, so why not try a new approach? Gameifying reading and honoring multiple forms of literacy is an important step toward creating a vibrant reading culture at your school and this activity pack is aimed at helping all secondary ELA students stop the summer slide.
Research shows us that the "summer slide" is very real - especially for communities that are underfunded. Instead of making summer reading a chore or a punishable assignment, encourage kids to enjoy their summer reading book and let them know they'll have lots of creative ways to demonstrate their reading experience. Ditch the quizzes and essays - these creative projects and gamified reading experiences are not only more fun, but you're able to pair them with other types of back to school activities in the fall. Imagine going back to your classroom at the start of the year with an engaging project and work time: what a perfect time to float around the room, casually chat with students about books, and start building a classroom atmosphere of both rigor (keep those high expectations!) and creativity!
ACTIVITY ONE: SUMMER READING CHALLENGE CARDS
With 18 different choices, these challenge cards give students choice and flexibility as they interact with various forms of text over the summer.
ACTIVITY TWO: SUMMER READING BINGO CARDS
These BINGO games are a way to reset the energy surrounding summer reading at your school: instead of summer reading being a chore, it's a fight to save education. It's a challenge. This product acknowledges authentic literacy in the BINGO game and celebrates a wide-variety of literacy type activities that can be easily added to your already scheduled summer reading book assignments. In the BINGO game, students are challenged to:
- Take a #shelfie and post it to social media
- Travel to a city they've never been before
- Write a letter to a long lost friend
- Download a news app, read, and share articles
- Learn how to cook or bake something new
- ...and more!
Used as a supplement to your already scheduled summer reading initiative, this product will add a splash of color, a unifying and motivational hashtag, and bring to light the real reason why we ask kids to keep working over the summer. This is a chance to be transparent with your students and also have a little bit of fun!
ACTIVITY THREE: SUMMER SLIDE POSTERS
To rev up the energy before summer comes, decorate the hallways with these posters to heighten awareness about what the summer slide is and why your school is committed to creating a culture for reading!
ACTIVITY FOUR: SUMMER READING INFORMAL ASSESSMENTS FOR FALL
Here are five creative, project-based assessment ideas to implement in conjunction with your summer reading assignments. Each of these is explained in a handout that is ready to print and assign (or edit if desired):
- Socratic seminar
- One-pager
- Gallery walk
- ScreenCast
- Digital Media
BONUS: TEACHER GUIDE & RUBRIC
You'll also receive a teacher guide with suggestions for implementation as well as a FULLY EDITABLE RUBRIC. The rubric is applicable to all of the different project options because it concentrates on the content rather than the product - each project asks students to highlight the big ideas and universal themes utilizing textual evidence, so even if one student is discussing the book in a socratic seminar and another is baking a cake in the shape of a character's face, each student's project is fueled by the same criteria.
