Summer 8th Close Read Comprehensive Passages with Complex Text Dependent Ques.

This is the Summer packet for 8th Grade students!

For 8th graders heading off to 9th grade and needing to keep their reading and analyzing skills sharp, this packet is perfect for you!

BUT... don't let the cover page throw you off!! This is an excellent collection of 8th grade passages with complex questions! Good for ALL YEAR!!!

All of the following excerpts, charts, passages and diagrams are associated with either a variety of multiple choice reading comprehension questions, open-response questions, student inquiry, both short and long answer questions or a combination of strategies.

Students will get acquainted with taking complex-question assessments. Use for; weekly assessments, pre-assessment, post-assessment, progress monitoring, and whatever else you have in mind!

Questions involve; close reading, using context clues, inference, poetry elements, plot, characterization, analytical reading, comprehension, reading for meaning, vocabulary and so much more!

Summer Packet Includes 10 passages:
1. Fiction - An excerpt from The Archived
-Key Elements: Close read, deciphering meaning, point of view, characterization, setting, tone, personification, understanding meaning.

2. Poetry- The Tree
-Key Elements: Close read of poetry, poetic elements, understanding meaning, personification, symbolism, theme.

3. Fiction -An excerpt from A Wrinkle in Time
-Key Elements: Close read, characterization, mood, synonyms, imagery, understanding meaning, attitude and morals of a character.

4. Drama (Play) - An excerpt from the drama Twelve Angry Men
- this passage is lengthy
-Key Elements: Close read of a drama, elements of a drama, synonyms, deciphering meaning, characterization, foreshadowing, stage directions, mood.

5. Nonfiction (deciphering diagrams) - Wastewater Treatment
-An analytical look at three different diagrams
-Key Elements: Deciphering diagrams, understanding differences, compare/contrast

6. Nonfiction - Penguins
-Key Elements: Close read, deciphering meaning, organization, author’s purpose

7. Nonfiction - The Pony Express
-Key Elements: Close read, understanding text, synonyms, deciphering maps, author’s purpose, main idea, opinion

8. Nonfiction - An excerpt from Tracking Trash
-Key Elements: Close read, deciphering meaning, definitions, compare/contrast, author’s purpose, understanding text, setting, character

9. Nonfiction - An excerpt from Chasing Lincoln's Killer
- Key Elements; Close read, cause and effect, deciphering maps and understanding, defining terms

10. Nonfiction - Garfield
-Key Elements; Close read, synonym, deciphering meanings, main idea, organization, validity of a character

NOTE: **If you are purchasing more than one grade level packet of the same month within middle school (6-8) please note that they are extremely similar. This is because Common Core groups middle school as 6-8 and the concepts are very similar throughout the three years. Some passages/questions differ depending on the monthly packet.
