Description

A student's St. Patrick's Day STEM project succeeded and captured a leprechaun. Can your fifth graders use their math skills to help free the leprechaun in this St. Patrick's Day themed digital escape room? Take a break from worksheets and get kids excited about reviewing standards all with little prep! Anyone with a device and internet connection can use this online breakout. A Google Form™ automates the escape process (no e-mail addresses or Google Classroom™ required). There are no clues to hide or answers to check. The Form only lets students progress as correct answers are entered. The clues are written as limericks for some extra holiday fun and a cross-curricular connection.

This digital breakout works on tablets, computers, or even phones. Small groups of 2-4 students are recommended, but this activity can be completed by individuals for enrichment or review.

In order to complete the four puzzles in this digital escape room, students must be able to:

  • Calculate the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths. This will include multiplying fractions, mixed numbers, and whole numbers
  • Interpret a decimal number written in expanded form
  • Divide by powers of 10
  • Multiply decimal numbers
  • Add and subtract decimal numbers
  • Round decimal numbers
  • Follow the order of operations and evaluate expressions that include brackets, braces, and parentheses.
  • Create equations for multi-step word problems
  • Complete an "input/output" table for a variable with two rules

Included in the PDF:

  • Letter from the leprechaun with a QR code to access the Google Form (URL also provided)
  • Printable "Helper Page" to assist students in working out two of the puzzles
  • Printable copies of the clues to encourage even more student involvement
  • Optional link for teachers to create a copy of the Google Form to their own drives
  • Directions for an optional limerick writing activity
  • Success signs and photobooth items to snap a picture with when students complete the challenge
  • Quickstart guide and detailed instructions
  • Answer key & teacher tips
  • Tools and tips to implement this activity remotely for online instruction

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge quickly (30 minutes), but most will take longer. The majority of students will take between 35-55 minutes. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
  • Can this be used for distance learning? Absolutely! The last three pages of the pdf include detailed directions and tips to help you successfully implement this activity for remote learning.

This St. Patrick's Day digital breakout activity reviews a wide variety of 5th grade math standards including 5.NF.B.4, 5.NF.B.4.b, 5.NBT.A.2, 5.NBT.A.3.a, 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.7, 5.OA.A.1, 5.OA.A.2, 5.OA.B.3, and 5.G.A.1. Students get to practice problems in a fun and engaging way that encourages collaboration.
