The information included within these handouts is designed to give parents/caregivers a general guide so they are aware of the speech and language milestones and skills their child is developing at different ages. The information included is intentionally brief and written in caregiver-friendly terms. These handouts should not be used to set goals, determine eligibility for services, etc.
Each handout includes the following:
- “I am learning to”- This section includes brief milestones which explain the skills the child is developing at that age.
- “Things I enjoy”- This section outlines things most children enjoy doing at that age.
- “How you can help”- This section gives some simple tips for how parents/caregivers can support the development of these skills at home.
Ideas for use:
- Share with parents/caregivers after initial assessments/evaluations.
- Share with parents/caregivers after IEP meetings (or similar).
- Put on a bulletin board display in your clinic room or waiting area. Print extras so parents/caregivers can take a copy home.
- Put in a binder and share with parents/caregivers whenever they have questions about their child’s progress.
- Print and bind into a booklet for your own reference or to share with others.
US and UK/AUS versions are included, as well as both color and black and white options.
Please note: A variety of sources were considered and compiled together while creating this resource. There is some discrepancy between skills & milestones reported at each age & stage, therefore the most commonly reported skills/milestones/values were chosen.
