What educators are saying
Description
Learn sentence structure, sentence variety, phrases, and clauses from the experts: authors! This is a Google Slides file that can be used as an interactive whiteboard in Google Slides or in Jamboard. Students will learn 14 different sentence, phrase, and clause rules by reading the rule, a mentor sentence, and then writing their own sentence demonstrating that rule on a sticky note. For each rule, there are three slides with three different mentor sentences from popular Young Adult literature!
Students will learn and practice the following:
- independent clauses
- dependent clauses
- independent clauses first (no comma)
- dependent clause first (comma)
- simple sentence
- compound sentence
- complex sentence
- compound-complex sentence
- noun phrase
- appositive phrase
- verb phrase
- prepositional phrase
- sentence variety
- breaking the rules (students will love seeing how authors use their grammar expertise to break the rules!)
To use in Google Slides, simply share through Google Classroom or share the Google Slides link with students so that every student can edit. In edit mode, students can read the rule, the mentor sentence, and then write their own version on the provided sticky notes.
To use in Jamboard, download the file as a jpeg and add to a new Jamboard. Share the link to the Jamboard with your students in Google Classroom or through email so that students can edit the file. Students will not be able to move the background, but can easily add their own sticky notes. PLEASE NOTE: Jamboard is not permitted in all districts. Check your district's permissions before planning on using in Jamboard. If your district does not allow Jamboard, Slides is the perfect alternative!
Use the Sentence Structure Mentor Sentences as a bell ringer, review, practice, or exit ticket. After students add their own examples, ask them to share their own OR a classmate's example that they thought applied the rule well. As students share, give students the opportunity to rethink and fix any mistakes. Students will not only learn from the mentor sentence, but from their classmates' examples!
Includes:
- Teacher instructions
