Description

Writing formal lab reports can be laborious and tedious for students. Give students the opportunity to peer review their classmate's lab reports before submitting them for a final grade from you, their teacher!

Formal lab reports can be daunting and reviewing lab reports is foreign to most high school students. This peer review worksheet and checklist helps students review each other's lab reports anonymously; giving students the opportunity to update their reports and earn a better grade.

The PDF file includes a detailed checklist and proofreading questions and prompts for students to effectively review their classmate's reports anonymously! The checklist is general enough that it can be used for ANY science course and ANY inquiry lab that is performed in the science classroom. The checklist prompts students to review the following areas of the report:

  • Problem/Question
  • Background Information
  • Scientific Issues and/or Concepts
  • Lab Procedure
  • Analysis of Data
  • Conclusion
  • General Lab Requirements (grammar, spelling, etc.)

Each area has multiple prompts for students to check off if the item is included/accurate in the peer's report.

Make the peer review process as detailed as this rubric or only choose specific sections for students to peer review.

Proper use of this peer review checklist requires some prep work on the teacher's part to remove student names from labs and assign labs numbers to track which lab belongs to which student. The original author of the lab will know who reviewed the lab but the reviewers will not know the author of the lab they are reviewing!
