Description
If you are looking to assess your student's knowledge of rhetorical analysis and appeals, but don't want to assign another quiz or essay, then you HAVE to try this fun advertising commercial project in your classroom.
Students will use their knowledge of persuasion and ethos, pathos, and logos to create their very own radio or TV advertisements! This project- based approach to learning will keep them engaged, and help them retain key rhetorical strategies. Students will LOVE using their creativity and using technology to create their ads!
What's Included:
- Teacher directions and execution tips
- An Advertisement Organizer for students to plan their advertisement.
- A completed sample organizer to use when modeling for students
- A script template for their radio or TV advertisement
- A completed sample script to use when modeling for students
- Rubric for easy grading
- A post-project activity: Advertisement viewing party!
To use this resource, students should already have a baseline understanding of ethos, pathos, and logos. If you are looking for a great introductory resource on these topics, check out my Google Slides presentation resource, with examples and a self-grading quiz!
Suggestions for executing this project:
Day 1:
Start by introducing the assignment and brainstorming products or services that students could use to advertise.
Once students have some fun ideas, you can introduce the advertisement organizer. Use the sample advertisement organizer (provided) as a model for students so they can see what the expectation is for completing the task.
Day 2:
Introduce the advertisement script and rubric (provided). Students should write out their advertisement in script form, and highlight the components of the advertisement that align with rhetorical appeals and persuasion. Show students the sample script as a model for what’s expected (provided).
Days 3-4:
Give them additional time to work, or allow for some peer editing of their scripts. Once completed students can begin recording their advertisements. I usually like to give students 2-3 days to record and edit the video if using class time, and a week to record/edit if students are completing this outside of class time.
Day 5:
Once all commercials are completed you can have a viewing party! As students watch they will use the viewing party reflection sheet (provided) to guess whether ethos, pathos and/or logos were used, giving them another opportunity to practice identifying these rhetorical appeals in their daily lives.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"This resource was a great crash course of rhetoric and ethos/pathos/logos. We used this more for media literacy lessons, but there were great scaffolded activities."
