What educators are saying

I found this resource to be highly effective in reinforcing math concepts and fostering a deeper understanding among my students. The activities were thoughtfully designed to cater to different learning styles and abilities, allowing all students to participate and succeed.
I used this resource with my advanced 5th grade math students during math groups at the end of the year. They were able to persevere and work together to solve the problems, and had fun completing an escape room.

Description

The ability to evaluate expressions in word problems is required to save the rocket launch when the mission control team goes missing in this exciting QUICK online breakout. If you are looking for a fun worksheet alternative for your students to practice or review sixth grade expressions and equations standards 6.EE.A.2, 6.EE.A.2a, and 6.EE.A.2c, then this easy to implement digital escape room is for you! It is easy to use both in class or for distance learning. Homeschoolers also love these math activities!

In order to start the rocket's launch sequence, students first need to get into mission control by solving a story problem with an expression with two variables for the given value of the variables. Next, they need to find the mission code name by choosing which expression could be used to evaluate a given word problem. Finally, students race to find the four digit PIN number to activate the launch by evaluating three more expressions with one or more variables including whole number exponents.

Anybody with a device and an internet connection can complete this escape room. There are no clues to hide, and the activity is self-checking. The Google Form™ which automates the escape process will not allow students to progress through the puzzles until correct answers are entered. You do not need to be Google™ users to use this product!

What are Quick Escapes?

Our regular escape rooms take between 30-60 minutes on average to complete. This quick escape should take 15-30 minutes for most students (please note that the time can vary on either end of this estimate based on factors such as proficiency of the standard, whether or not the teacher allows calculators, if the teacher requires students to complete the included student recording page, etc). Quick escapes focus in on specific standards to provide teachers with the opportunity to provide enrichment, review, or assessment of these skills. Quick escapes are perfect for bell ringers, early finishers, or when you find yourself with time to spare in your schedule. While we recommend our longer escape rooms to be completed in small groups, Quick Escapes are perfect for individual assessment or for working on with a partner.

In order to complete the puzzles, students must be able to:

  • Evaluate expressions in word problems involving one or more variables for a given value of the variable(s)
  • Select which expression could be used to find the given information in a word problem (writing expressions 6.EE.A.2a)
  • Evaluate expressions which include whole number exponents
  • Evaluate expressions that include decimals or fractions
  • Follow the order of operations when evaluating expressions

Please carefully view the preview images and video to make sure that your students have the skills to complete the tasks in this escape room.

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (20 minutes), others will take longer. The majority of students will take between 25-45 minutes. Requiring students to use the recording form will increase the amount of time required to complete the puzzles. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For example, express the calculation “Subtract 𝘺 from 5” as 5 - 𝘺.
Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s³ and A = 6 s² to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.
