Description

Ladies and Gentlemen start your engines with this 21st Century Math Project. Let students explore circumference in the context of auto racing. Students will compare wheel sizes, lengths of circular tracks and more!

In this 23 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, 3 assignments and one project for students to use. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***

-- In “Super Speedway” students will practice using circumference and arc length to solve problems about the lengths of tracks.

-- In “The Wheel Goes Round” students will calculate the circumference of wheels and use rotations per minute measurements to determine how far the wheel goes.

-- In “Racing Revolution” students will look at four different races, their tires and RPMs to determine which racer finished first. There are four races so it may be a good idea to do the first one together and allow them to work with partners on the other three.

-- In “Race Day” students will play a partner game that will require each student to cut out a set of Tires and RPMs. There are 7 of each. Students will race against each other in seven different heats. Students will select a tire size and an RPM measurement, calculate how fast they would complete the given track and compare that result to their opponent. Whoever wins more races is anointed the “Greatest Student in the History of School”.
