Learning Objective
After reading four short stories, the student will identify the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution for each.
Description
Teach your student to identify the plot with these four original short stories. Students are given the task of identifying the five plot elements for each story (introduction/exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion/resolution), and then writing them on the plot diagram. Students need lots of practice to become proficient in this skill. These no-prep worksheets or task cards are ready to go for you. Just print and go! These passages were written for students in 4th through 6th grade.
This resource is provided in both task card format and worksheet format. Also, there is an option for full-page passages or half-page passages in the task card format. All three options are available with this single purchase. Further description of the three formats is provided in the preview (and downloaded product). An answer key is included.
This resource contains the following practice passages:
Passage 1: Ayden's Day at the Lake
Passage 2: Stranded in Wyoming
Passage 3: The Unforgettable Hike
Passage 4: What to Do with Fido
********This resource is available in TWO FORMATS:
- TRADITIONAL PRINTABLES- Print the PDF and distribute paper copies to your students to complete.
- TPT EASEL ACTIVITY- I created a new, colorful version for this digital format. Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each passage and identify the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Then, students complete a plot diagram for the story. Students type complete sentences in answer boxes.

Here's what teachers like you had to say about these plot task cards:
- Oh Sweet Students of Mine said, "I use this every year when teaching the plot structure! I love having the story on one side of the page and the plot structure graphic organizer on the other side. It makes it so easy for the kids to follow along."
- The Youngblood Clan said, "This is an absolutely fabulous lesson. The students were engaged with passages. I liked how the diagrams reinforced "plot mountain" which I had taught earlier in the year."
- Michelle S. said, "I've been looking for a good resource to teach plot. I finally found it with this resource. I loved the graphic organizer and the short stories to go with it. We were able to complete one together as a class and then there were enough to try in small groups and as independent work. The stories were easy for my 4th graders to read & comprehend without being too easy and the graphic organizer was easy to follow."
- Swimming with Sanders said, "THIS IS PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On Monday we discussed plot and talked about the features. Tuesday-Thursday we did one of these together, every day they independently had to do a new one. So by Friday they did one by themselves for a quiz."
