    Why you’ll love it

I created these resources because I couldn’t find a comprehensive personal hygiene resource pack that covered the most important daily personal hygiene tasks that children need to learn. And the ones I could find didn’t include a social narrative story, with fun and engaging visuals and a clear and easy-to-understand format.

This personal hygiene toolkit is my answer to that - it includes everything you need to teach hand and face washing, hair and teeth brushing, and nose blowing. For each of the five personal hygiene skills / resources, it includes a social narrative story, engaging visuals, sequencing activity, comprehension worksheets, and reward sheets, as well as fun certificates and licenses to give out to the kids to celebrate each win!

Each personal hygiene resource includes the following:

    1. Social narrative story – The social narrative story supports students to understand a concept, skill, behaviour or situation. This helps build students' self-awareness by providing information in a clear and easily understood format. PowerPoint and pdf versions of the story are provided. These are not editable.

    2. Visuals – Visuals help provide extra prompts and decrease students' reliance on caregivers, thus increasing their independence. Visuals can be a powerful tool in teaching new personal hygiene and life skills.

    3. Sequencing activity – Sequencing is the skill that we use when we break down an activity into simple steps and put those steps in order. Sequencing skills help us understand how to perform certain tasks that require the steps to be done in a specific order.

    4. Task analysis / Data collection – Use activity analysis to measure students' baseline, measure progress, form goals and identify specific strengths and challenges. PDF and editable (PowerPoint) versions provided.

    5. Backwards chaining handout – Backward chaining is a method to teach life skills. Backwards chaining involves breaking a task down into steps, and then teaching the last steps first to give the child a sense of mastery and achievement.

    6. Letter to families – Let families know what important life skills and personal hygiene skills students are developing at school. PDF and editable (PowerPoint) versions are provided.

    7. Student comprehension worksheet – A visual worksheet to suit a range of abilities, and tests students' comprehension / understanding.

    8. Student self-reflection worksheet – This is an optional activity to complete with students to help them reflect on their own understanding, measure changes in knowledge and set goals.. It may not be appropriate for all skill levels. You could use this as a stand-alone activity, both at the start and end of learning each topic.

    9. Reward chart – Send home for families to use to help motivate and celebrate each win.

    10. Certificate and license – At the end of practicing each personal hygiene skills at school, give out certificates and/or licenses to celebrate students' progress and hard work.
