Performance Task Practice Lessons: Narrative - Trapped in a Blizzard

Performance Tasks on the State Tests are some of the most difficult things to teach. The students know all of the subject matter, yet putting it all together into one cohesive writing piece is so difficult. Students will start by analyzing a narrative writing prompt (“Write a narrative about a person who is trapped inside during a blizzard”) and then create an anchor chart of requirements from that prompt. Next, they will read sources that provide information on both surviving a blizzard and the tools that are used to measure blizzard weather conditions. Using these sources, students will answer text-based questions that require referring to the sources. The students will take notes, plan, and draft a full narrative based upon the prompt and sources.
