    Description

The Ark of the Covenant and King Solomon's Temple were hugely influential in the Old Testament. The ark held the location of the mercy seat where God would dwell among the Israelite. It was later placed in the temple, in the Holy of Holies.

Students can learn about the temple and the ark by creating a scale model of them. Take a look at the details below:

Model of the Ark of the Covenant:

This activity gives students the opportunity to read through God's instructions in Exodus 25, then they will answer 11 questions about the passage and follow the directions written in their packets (and the Bible) on how to construct their arks.

In the end, students will have a scale model of the ark of the covenant (1 inch=1 cubit) along with the tablets of the covenant law inside the ark.

    This product includes:

    1. Teacher Directions: Prep Info and Materials Needed
    2. Teacher Procedure
    3. Activity Steps with Pictures
    4. Student Packet-Short reading, Bible verse references, 11 questions with directions and two pages of Ark pieces
    5. Student Packet Answers
    6. Teacher Tips

To do this activity, students will need:

    • Bible (can use laptops, if desired)
    • Pencil
    • Scissors
    • Glue
    • Yellow, orange and/or gold colored pencils or crayons (markers can work, but they tend make the paper droopy and more difficult to construct)
    • Copy of "The Ark of the Covenant" student packet (INCLUDED)

Make a Model of the Temple:

To do this activity, students will receive a packet (provided). They will read about the temple and will look up specific Biblical references that talk about the construction of the temple. They will answer questions and they will cut out the provided pieces, color them and tape them together.

By the end of the activity, students will make the temple building, the portico (porch), holy of holies, curtain, the two pillars (Boaz and Jachin), chains with pomegranates and the outer storage buildings that surround the temple.

This project is specific and detailed, which is why it is recommended that high school age or older do this activity. (Some high-level 8th graders could do this as well).
