What educators are saying

LOVE the Quick Escape Room!!! My students did not feel overwhelmed, and they loved the pizza restaurant theme. They needed very little clarification from me before running away with it. Thank you!
I used this as a challenge task for when work was completed and the kids really enjoyed it! This worked very well for my mid to high range learners as an independent activity.

Description

Multiplication of fractions by whole numbers can help your 4th graders escape the pizza parlor in this online breakout activity. Mutlipyling fractions by whole number word problems and puzzles make a great worksheet alternative. This escape room will have students racing to solve problems in which they need to multiply fractions by whole numbers. In this QUICK (20 minutes or less, more depending on if/how the student recording page is used) online breakout, students are challenged to solve three puzzles with word problems requiring a firm grasp of multiplication of fractions with whole numbers (4.NF.B.4). This escape room is automated by a Google Form™ (does NOT require Google Classroom™ or e-mail addresses), so there are no answers to check or clues to hide. Easily use this breakout for distance learning; it is simple to implement with virtually no prep, making it a great worksheet alternative!

What are Quick Escapes?

Our regular escape rooms take between 30-60 minutes on average to complete. Quick escapes should take 10-15 minutes for most students (please note that the time can vary on either end of this estimate based on factors such as proficiency of the standard, whether or not the teacher allows calculators, if the teacher requires students to complete the included student recording page, etc).Quick escapes focus in on specific standards to provide teachers with the opportunity to provide enrichment, review, or assessment of these skills. Quick escapes are perfect for bell ringers, early finishers, or when you find yourself with time to spare in your schedule. While we recommend our longer escape rooms to be completed in small groups, Quick Escapes are perfect for individual assessment or for working on with a partner. These fast online breakouts also make fun activities for math tutors to spice up their tutoring sessions!

Skills required to complete this online breakout:

  • Multiply fractions by whole numbers 4.NF.B.4
  • Convert improper fractions to mixed numbers
  • Solve word problems involving multiplication of fractions with whole numbers and interpret the answers. Example: What is the minimum number of pizzas that can be ordered if five friends each plan to eat 3/4 of a pizza?
  • Carefully read clues in order to enter the answers properly

What are teachers saying about this multiplying fractions by whole numbers activity?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "This was a great resource. I knew that this was a "quick" escape room, but I didn't know how long it would actually take my kids. It ended up taking my kids about 10-15 minutes. This is a great activity for an express review of the concept." -Hadley D.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I love that this resource is challenging enough to keep my students engaged and working hard to solve the steps to breakout." -Lakisha P.

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (15 minutes), others will take longer. The majority of students will take between 25-45 minutes. Requiring students to use the recording form will increase the amount of time required to complete the puzzles. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.

Standards

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
Understand a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 as a multiple of 1/𝘣. For example, use a visual fraction model to represent 5/4 as the product 5 × (1/4), recording the conclusion by the equation 5/4 = 5 × (1/4).
Understand a multiple of 𝘢/𝘣 as a multiple of 1/𝘣, and use this understanding to multiply a fraction by a whole number. For example, use a visual fraction model to express 3 × (2/5) as 6 × (1/5), recognizing this product as 6/5. (In general, 𝘯 × (𝘢/𝘣) = (𝘯 × 𝘢)/𝘣.)
Solve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, if each person at a party will eat 3/8 of a pound of roast beef, and there will be 5 people at the party, how many pounds of roast beef will be needed? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?
