Description

This Mother’s Day geometry activity is perfect for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade math. In this differentiated craftivity, students will create a card for someone special for Mother’s Day by applying their knowledge of quadrilaterals. Students will review the properties of squares, rectangles, rhombuses, trapezoids and parallelograms.

THE CHALLENGE:

Students will draw as many quadrilaterals as they can inside the heart template. A grid is provided inside the heart for students to easily draw their shapes.

Students can reference their cheat sheet during the challenge which provides quadrilateral visuals and definitions.

The student with the most quadrilaterals drawn inside their heart wins!

*You can choose to use this product as a CHALLENGE or ACTIVITY. There are two separate products. Use the CHALLENGE product if you want your students to compete for extra motivation. Use the ACTIVITY product if you don’t want your students to compete.

DIFFERENTIATION:

  • Challenge/Activity 1 - does not require the heart to have symmetry.
  • Challenge/Activity 2 - requires the heart to have symmetry.

**This is a print and go activity. All documents are in a zip drive in PDF form. Digital links are located in the Teacher’s Guide.**

CHOOSE YOUR OWN COLORS:

If you want to give your students more artistic freedom, there is “Choose Your Own Colors” option where students have the ability to pick their own colors for each quadrilateral and personalize their design.

THE CARD:

After students create their quadrilateral design in their heart, they fill in the shapes with adjectives to describe a special father in their life. They can personalize the card even further by writing a message on the back using the Card Template Extension Activity.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
