unit 1: Growth and National Identity
Unit (Strand) Overview: Technological advancement throughout the 19th century led to the rise of industrial nations. Countries that had stable political systems, large populations, and geographic advantages were able to expand their global influence. In the late 1800’s Italy and Germany began to assert themselves as powerful nations. Furthermore, countries around the world began to take control of weaker nations in order to establish themselves politically, economically, and socially as the more powerful nations in the world, the result of which was war and confrontation.
Unit 2: Power and Global Conflict
Unit (Strand) Overview: Rising awareness of national identity, competition for resources, and advancements in technology led to tensions between major European powers culminating in the outbreak of World War I. Despite the formal peace agreement that followed the war, unresolved issues remained. In between the wars, political and economic conditions deteriorated, leading to the rise of extremist leaders. Following this ideological shift, World War II ensued causing massive global turmoil. The Holocaust is an example of how inhumanity was demonstrated during this tumultuous time.

Unit (Strand) Overview: The years following World War II are characterized by the struggle between communist and capitalist ideologies. The Cold War had a profound impact on many nations other than the Soviet Union and the United States. Nations struggled to establish stable governments that met the needs of their people. Also during this time, many emerging nations struggled to earn respect on the world stage. Although World War II was over, there was still global upheaval and dissent on a massive scale. As a reaction to earlier European imperialism, former colonies rebelled and sought to gain sovereignty and national identity. This time period was filled with numerous regional conflicts with far reaching consequences.
