What educators are saying

My students that were struggling worked in groups with this and gained confidence to work independently.
We did this for my STEM camp and it worked really well. My students were excited to make their magnet work.

Learning Objective

Students will use engineering skills to make an electromagnet. Students will also practice reading informational text skills by reading a nonfiction article all about magnets.

Description

Students will make an electromagnet using STEM engineering skills. They will design, test, and refine their electromagnet through investigation. Aligned with NGSS for third and fourth grade. This resource includes two lessons. One is a STEM Engineering lesson on making an electromagnet. The other is a reading informational text lesson that comes with a 3-page informational text article on magnets. This resource includes flaps and folds for interactive notebooks.

This lesson is aligned with NGSS

3-PS2-3. Ask questions to determine cause and effect relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other.

3-PS2-4. Define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets.

4-PS3-4. Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another (electromagnet lesson)

And

3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting

3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the

criteria and constraints of the problem.

3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify

aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

NGSS Science and Engineering Practices Used:

Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering)

Developing and using models. Planning and carrying out investigations. Analyzing and interpreting data

Using mathematics and computational thinking

Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering)

Engaging in argument from evidence

Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

Also Aligned with CCSS for Reading Informational Text.
