What educators are saying

A fantastic resource for our inspired narrative unit. Students loved identifying how Guluu, the magpie, uses his High 5 in response to mean birds (or bullies). Will certainly be using this resource again when teaching this unit.

Description

This is one of my most popular resources (58 pages!).

"Mad Magpie" is an inspiring picture book by Australian First Nations author and illustrator, Gregg Dreise. Mad Magpie tells the story of Guluu, an angry magpie who is being teased by a gang of butcher birds and he has trouble controlling his anger. When Guluu seeks advice, his Elders tell him to stay calm like the river, to ignore the butcher birds and to be strong on the inside. The book has strong bullying prevention messages told through an engaging narrative story, that embeds wisdom from the Elders.

It is a perfect story for teachers interested in establishing a positive and supportive classroom culture, or for schools implementing bullying prevention strategies.

Free teacher notes and details about how to purchase the book are available via the Magabala Books website.
