Impact of Fall of Rome and Beginning of Dark Ages Worksheet

In this 4 page worksheet/lesson, students examine how the fall of Rome impacted Europe and led to the "Dark Ages" or Middle Ages.

They begin with a Do Now that sets up the lesson and connects the material to their previous knowledge. Then students analyze maps, images, and read a primary source excerpt from a medieval historian to determine how Germanic and Viking invasions impacted Western Europe (students especially enjoy the images of ancient Viking graffiti!). The lesson allows opportunities for discussion and contrasts the Byzantine Empire with the decline of Western Europe.

Students then examine linguistic charts and population graphs to identify the intellectual and urban decline in the Middle Ages after the fall of Rome. The worksheet concludes by asking students to assess a secondary source excerpt, and then write their own response synthesizing and analyzing how the fall of Rome impacted Western Europe.

A complete teacher answer key is included and the worksheet file is left in Word so you may edit it according to the needs of your class.
