I created this activity to bring the experience of the Holocaust Museum into my middle school classroom. The original idea came because we could not get a field trip spot to any Holocaust Museums in the area and I wanted my student to have the experience. However, thanks to a lot of hard work and kindness on the museum's side they were able to accommodate us on short notice. So I used this activity to teach museum etiquette and prepare the students for what they were going to experience. It was very moving for the students.
There are twenty one photos that I separate into four categories: The Victims, Persecution, Deportation, and Genocide. I have included the word file to print these categories. After hanging up the photos around the room I add the caption under the photo to give the students a little more context.
I dim the lights before the students enter the room and start my class in the hallway. I tell them that I have converted my classroom into a museum and the assignment for the day is to reflect on the photos they see. I require a paragraph on each of the four categories, but I have also done it with the students reflecting on each picture. You'll know which works better with your class :) I like to wrap up the lesson with a class discussion on the terrible nature of the holocaust and answer any questions the kiddos might have.
Because I also take the students to visit the holocaust museum at the end of the novel I use this exercise to practice museum etiquette.
