What educators are saying

These were particularly fun beginning of the year activities. My Happy Place and the Wilderness Survival were my favorites. The Wilderness survival was a great way to walk around the room and pop into some silly discussions to start a rapport with new students.
My students used this as one of the opening activities at the beginning of the school year. It was easy to use and engaging.

Description

Getting to know your students during the back to school rush can seem overwhelming, but I've got you covered. These six lessons will get you started back in building relationships, setting expectations, and creating an environment of academic excellence.

Have you checked out Volume 1 of this product series? Make sure you don't miss it!

What's included?

There are six lessons included in this resource:

  1. My Happy Place: in this lesson, students create a virtual "happy place" - a real or imaginary world where they are the happiest. Teacher directions will show you how to make your own sample and the student assignment is ready to assign and walks students through all steps of creation. Students may present these on Flipgrid, create a voiceover video with a screen recording platform, or even present them in person (that is, if you have your kids live!) All directions and tutorials are included and hyperlinked to support you.
  2. A Week in the Wilderness: For this exercise, you will be able to break students into small groups, in person or online. In their small groups, students must decide on three items from a list that they can unanimously agree to take with them to live in the Alaskan wilderness for one week. Students report back their rationale and work on their communication and teamwork skills.
  3. Instagram Intros 2.0: After students have created their intros, you can then extend this assignment and ask students to create their "9-Grid". Essentially, they'll pair their bio with nine square photos that tell a story about themselves and further the get-to-know-you experience.
  4. All About Me Cento Poem: Teach your students how to create a patchwork poem using text and documents from all around the classroom. This activity marries creative writing with a fun introduction.
  5. All About Me Dictionary Page Blackout Banner: Create a dictionary page banner and let students personalize it by creating blackout poems. Directions and banner template included.
  6. All About Me One Pager: Using one or all of these six templates will give students a creative and visual way to present their personalities.

ALSO INCLUDED:

Two items from my first activity pack are included in this version as well. The Letter to My Teacher is one of the most important things I do in my classroom, and the Instagram Intros 1.0 is the pre-requisite for this pack's 2.0 version.

  • Letter to My Teacher (repeat): Every year, I always share a short slide show of pictures of my life and tell a few stories to help my students get to know me better. Their homework, after I've shared about myself, is for them to write me a letter. This product contains the letter assignment and requirements ready for you to assign.
  • Instagram Intros (repeat): Every Instagram profile contains 150 words. In this exercise, students are encouraged to use the 150 word restriction to create a bio for themselves to share with the class. This doubles as a lesson in word choice and syntax.

These lessons can be used right away during the first week of school, but they could also be staggered throughout the semester as things change and evolve in your classroom. These activities are geared toward secondary-level students, but any primary teacher could easily adapt these templates to work for their classroom, too!

What does this Google Drive product look like?

After you purchase this product, you will receive a Google Drive folder of all of the lessons included! These are yours ready to edit, adapt, and assign directly to Google Classroom or the LMS of your school. Just purchase, download, edit as needed, and go!
